These early Christian figures were hidden in the walls of this little church on White Island until about 50 years ago. See our bookshop for our guide, Richard Chambers' book on these mysterious 1,000 year old figures.
Devenish Island , monastic site associated with Saint Molaise,
originally a site of pre-Christian learning. Described as a
"religious anomaly" the island had Augustinian Canons and
Culdee monks until c 1600. The Culdees were a native Irish form of
monasticism which produced very fine nature poetry.
