This fascinating collection of over 200 old photographs covers the towns of Ballyshannon, Bundoran and Belleek, focusing on the section of the River Erne between Belleek and the sea. It extends over nearly 150 years of photographic history, during which an enormous number of changes have taken place.
Each town is covered in turn. In addition to images of buildings long since changed or replaced, there are many portrayals of people and social activities, including sport, work and leisure. The whole collection therefore forms a comprehensive portrait of the history of the lower Erne valley. The emphasis on people, society and everyday activities means that all readers will find something of interest, and may even spot themselves or their relatives in a picture.
Several especially noteworthy institutions are examined in greater detail. There is a chapter on the Belleek Pottery and its products, as well as a section tracing the evolution of the Erne hydroelectric scheme, using pictures taken during construction.
Throughout the book, the pictures are fully complemented by informative captions, creating both a nostalgic reminder and a historical record. This will doubtless ensure that this compilation will be treasured for years to come by those who know the area. Available for £15 plus £5 P&P.
