‘Belturbet: A Chequered History' deals with the history of Belturbet and its environs from pre-historic times to present day. It recalls Belturbet's well known sons and daughters and looks at the development of religion and education in the town, along with its military history and the devastating effects of the famine on Belturbet as elsewhere in Ireland . The town's development in the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first century is vividly captured and the importance of the River Erne to Belturbet's welfare is thoroughly explored. The book also recalls local customs and practices, once so familiar and now all but gone, and looks at the role of farming and industry in Belturbet's past. The role of the railway is examined and sport and entertainment are also recounted bringing Belturbet's history up to the present day.
‘Beturbet: A Chequered History' is comprehensive work, which endeavours to encompass the myriad aspects of a town that once flourished as a primary town in the county and area and has seen its strategic location eroded with the changes time and events have wrought. George Morrissey brings to the work a huge personal interest in his native town and through several years painstaking research has produced a book of local history, which is a truly marvellous reference for any Belturbet person living abroad or for any local person to draw on for generations to come.
The book has 259 pages, 111 illustrations and is available from the author at €20 plus P&P It can also be purchased online here at erneheritagetours.com or contact George at georgemorrissey@eircom.net .
