Castle Caldwell
And Its Families

Author - John B. Cunningham

This is the story of Castle Caldwell and its people from 1610 to 1880. It deals with the social, economic, political and religious history of Belleek and surrounding areas in County Fermanagh and neighbouring counties. As well as being a local history, such was the nature of the people that the story overflows to all parts of Ireland and overseas; to sea battle in the West Indies, the American War of Independence and the glitter and pomp of the court of Empress Maria Theresa of the Holy Roman Empire. Nearly every aspect of Irish history has affected this area and we see in the microcosm of Castle Caldwell many of the factors which have made Ireland today. The principal families of the castle were in succession the Blennerhassetts, Caldwells and Bloomfields and the book has a chapter on the Caldwell stretching back through the generations in Ireland to the 1400s in Scotland making it an essential Caldwell genealogical tool. There is a nine page index listing hundreds of people of this area over four centuries.
