This is a book about the way life was, starting from a time more than sixty years ago, in the little bit of Ireland staddling the Border. Much has changed since then, for better and for worse; to my mind, one of the biggest changes of all is what happened to the spoken word in the mouths of the people. In our youth people has time for talk. Humour was the stuff of conversation. The daily entertainment was supplied by the people themselves, not by a box in the corner. How we enjoyed the flashes and stabs and barbs, the sallies and sure-fire retorted laced with native wit, the wild soaring imagination of the storyteller, the delight on the faces of the listeners. Words flew like sparks in stubble, and laughter was our tonic.
