Preface - Fermanagh’s Scenic Barony of Magheraboy/The Fermanagh Highlands.

This area of Fermanagh stretches west and south from Enniskillen and is bounded by the counties of Leitrim, Cavan and Donegal and on the north by the beautiful expanse of Lower Lough Erne and its numerous islands. Its mountainous central area is known as the Fermanagh Highlands and in Medieval Fermanagh, the ruling Maguires kept seven great herds of cattle in this region.

As cattle were the chief wealth of the time this area was essentially the financial bank of the Maguires. The
numerous raths and stone circles testify to early stone age settlement in the area and in Medieval times the chief
families of the area were O’Flanagan, Keown, Cox, Hosey, Dolan, Greene, Hoynes, Teevan & Foy to name a few.
During the Plantation of Ulster in the early 1600s Scottish settlers arrived such as Hamilton, Dunbar, Johnston,
Porteous, Montgomery, Bleakley, Wilson, Dundas, Nixon etc. Most of these came from the Scottish Lowlands or
the Scottish Borders. All of these people and their historic ancestors have contributed to the landscape and built
heritage of this region of Fermanagh. In essence the area comprises a mountainous centre surrounded by a series
of small towns and villages with a heartland in and about the region of caves, potholes and cliffs known as
Boho (pronounced as Bow and referred to as the Barrs of Boho). The Boho lowlands (the Bottoms of Boho) are
dominated by the 12 mile long Sillies River best known for its meandering course. This book is intended as a
photographic guide to the area with a mixture of comment and images that we hope will influence locals and tourists
alike to view and appreciate the beauty and history that surrounds them. The word Magheraboy means the Yellow
Plain. This book is intended as the second of a series of four to celebrate the beauty and heritage of County
Fermanagh hingeing on Enniskillen and covering the rest of Fermanagh in four regions beginning with north-west
Fermanagh.
