Author - John B. Cunningham
This book, now only available on CD, contains all the letters of John O' Donovan from County Fermanagh in 1834 at the time of the making of the first Ordnance Survey of Ireland. These contain his commentary on the life, antiquities, notable families, personalities, physical features and placenames of the county as he walked the length and breadth of it in a few months of the late Autumn and Winter of 1834. Particularly important in this book are the detailed genealogies he gives of many of Fermanagh's ancient clans such as Maguire and O'Flanagan and the numerous references to other Fermanagh families such as Mc Manus, Corrigan, Swift, Muldoon, Breslin, O'Corcoran etc.
His letters give a picture of the County of Fermanagh like no other writer has ever given at this time.
This book is also intended to sing the praises of John O' Donovan (1806-1861), a man to whom everyone who has any interest in Irish History owers a tremendous depth of gratitude. Everyone from University academic and scholar to local historian has made use of his life's work as an antiquarian, historian and scholar. The work is fully indexed and has three maps. This book is now out of print but is available as a CD at £15 + £3 P&P.
