While the area generally known as Lettercran has no official boundaries, it can be taken to include not only the townland of Lettercran but also Crilly, Cashelinney, Tievemore, Tybane, Grouselodge, Tullylark and Cullion, County Donegal near the village of Pettigo. This of course is to treat the border with Northern Ireland as a cut-off point for Lettercran. However, before the creation of the border, townlands such as Scraghey in Co Tyrone had a greater affinity with Lettercran than has been the case in recent years. This is borne out by the fact that some Scraghey children went to school in Lettercran many years ago and to this day some Scraghey families bury their dead in Lettercran graveyard. Here are stories of the local schoolteachers, priests, farmers and characters of the area that are a microcosm of life in rural Ireland along the Border.
