St Patrick's Church, Castle Archdale

By Richard W. Chambers

St Patrick's Church, Castle Archdale is unique in the Diocese of Clogher because it is the only one which was built when the Irish Arts & Crafts movement was at its peak. This movement's ethos was that a craftman's work of his own design whether it be stained glass, woodwork, metalwork, embroidery, or ceramics was art in its own right and worthy of recognition. St Patrick's Church demonstrates Irish Arts & Crafts at its best and the church has remained almost intact since its consecration on the 17th March 1908. The book covers the history of the parish, the clergy, the parishioners and the Archdale family and is appropriately illustrated throughout. The church, which is well known and appreciate both locally and further afield for its beauty and atmosphere, has not been written about before and this book delves a little deeper into how and why it came into being. The hundred years of the existence of St. Patrick's Church has been a century of incredible change but the sound values of good workmanship, dedication and friendship which are experiences in this beautiful and intimate church remain unaltered.
