After the dire poverty of the 1930s the outbreak of Warld War II brought unprecedented prosperity to Fermanagh. Millions of pounds were spent on military bases and military personnel had the money to buy anything, rationed or not. Smuggling flourished like never before. In the newspapers of the time stories of the War, and those who died, jostled with those of Customs seizures, poteen raids and the wayward doings of evacuee children. It was a vibrant time. The blackout brough its problems and prosecutions for non-compliance and rationing affected all. Compulsory ploughing, all night dances, jitterbugging, crashes, military funerals and marching feet echo through these pages. The aftermath of the 1940s was a return to austerity with rationing still in place but the war had changed everything. Today's society is in many ways the child of the 1940s. Pure nostalgia.
